That won't work if what he's playing goes lower than D, which much metal does these days.
I keep one bass tuned BEAD for my doom projects.

My suggestion would be to put your '71 Ric on eBay and get a good price for it. Then buy a new Ric (or a newer used one) and screw with that one (and pocket the difference). I don't know if I could condone messing around with such a great vintage instrument.

I had did the same thing (B-E-A-D) to my 4001. Had to file open the nuts and saddles. After a few years I had decided to use another bass (Epiphone EB-3L) for B-E-A-D and returned the RIC back to E-A-D-G set-up. It was a lot of work both times (modifying it and restoring it) and I would not suggest this for RIC's only because the extra work involved with the saddles... just more tedious to do than with more traditional (i.e Fender type) bass guitars.
Far from vintage (i.e. Gotoh tuners, Seymour Duncan PU's, non-original electronics, pickguard, etc), it was a real rat that had been hot-rodded and modded several times before I bought it used for $350 back in `93.

If you're tuning all the way down to B-E-A-D, you'd better find a singer who sounds like Cookie Monster.

Hey, Sleep was the definitive "Drop C" band of the Clinton Era. I remember listening to them when my pets.com stock was trading at a cool $85/share and Brett Favre didn't even know what a iPhone was, much less know how to use it to send pictures to his female co-workers.
But now, in 2011, if you dare drop even lower, to B? It's Cookie Monster time!
