Post subject:  Cliff Burton's Bass guitar on the first 3 Metallica albums

Hey Guys!!! Just wanted to know. I read that Cliff Burton, the former bassist of Metallica had a thing for Rickenbacker 4001's!! In fact, before he switched to his Aria bass, he was always seen brandishing a rickenbacker 4001 ( Dave Mustaine days!!) I think I even saw a video of him in the "Cliff 'em All" video performing a bass solo with his Rickenbacker 4001.

I also heard that like Roger Glover, Cliff Burton modified his Rick 4001 by adding different pick-ups.

Would anyone know what album Cliff Burton used his Rickenbacker 4001 to record on and if it was a stock, standard rickenbacker 4001 or a modified one?

Thanks again!!!!

Not sure which albums or, specifically, songs Cliff used his 4001 on, but he modified it with Gibson Mudbucker and DiMarzio J-style pickups. He also had a Seymour Duncan Stratocaster pick-up installed under the bridge in place of the mute.

By the way, I believe this subject has been discussed frequently on the forum. You might want to check the Deja Vu section.

In short, it's the bass used for Kill 'em All and Ride the Lightning.

The mods were probably done before KEA, and definitely before RtL.

Kill Em All - All Rickenbacker
Ride - A mix of both favoring his Aria B n' G
Master - Mostly Aria - At this time his Rickenbacker was messed up.

The 4001 was modified with a seymour strart pickup "under the bridge" (that as specific as it gets). It was mentioned that there was a "mute" buried under the bridge and they took that out and put the start pickup in. Does anyone know what they're referring to?

To answer the dude above me, they were done way before that. Almost right after he got his rick, when he was in his teens. It was done some guy in a guitar shop in san fran. I can look up the names and the quote (give a citation) about the strat pickup if anyone cares

Depends which mods. The added guitar pickup in the mute cavity may have been earlier, but there's video footage of him using it with the original pickups in '83.

Did he even have the Aria yet at the time of Ride? I'm a bit skeptical on that.

Ya, it had the original pups, just the added one. The guy who put it in was really specific but i've always been confused by what he meant by the bridge. http://books.google.com/books?id=F9uBIwlYSokC&printsec=frontcover&dq=to+live+is+to+die&hl=en&src=bmrr&ei=3EB1TaoexN-WB-LolaMB&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=book-thumbnail&resnum=1&ved=0CCcQ6wEwAA#v=onepage&q=rickenbacker&f=false

Yeah, that's the thing. It was modded a couple times. The added guitar pickup in the mute cavity was probably the first mod, with the dimarzio jazz bass pickup and the mudbucker coming later.

There weren't mute cavities in 70's rickenbackers? Where did you see he put in those pups?
