Relatively recently I replaced the foam mute on my 1980 4001.
The metal plate of my bridge mute didn't allow all the strings to be muted evenly so I bent it into shape... which means that the threads now don't mate up with the thumbscrews.
What is my best course of action?
Can I make the existing mute work properly or can I buy a new one? ...or will it mute unevenly too?

You might have bent it a little too much. Try shaping it from underneath installed on the screws in the tailpiece. Also make sure the foam piece is not too wide (front to back) or too long. Trim it if necessary.

If you bend too much it will cause problems. The curvature only needs to be very slight to work. I saw one example where a flat one worked. It depends on how you set your string action.

Be methodical, take it slow, and get it sussed--once you do it should never need adjustment again.
