The May issue of Bass Player magazine has a nice cover shot of Lemmy with his Rickenbacker bass. Unfortunately the interview with Lemmy doesn't include any discussion of the special features of this bass, including what appears to be 4 pickups.

Does anybody have more information about his bass? What pickup selection options does it have? It is quite cool-looking.

John

Here's some information about Lemmy's Limited Edition Rick Bass (4004LK) introduced in 1995:

Lemmy's 4004LK actually has three pickups. What appears to be a fourth pickup is actually just a 4003 bridge pickup surround and cover that he uses for a hand rest.

aceonbass,

Thanks. I was wondering if the bridge pickup cover had a functional pickup under it. It is one serious looking Rickenbacker. Anyone remember what the MSRP of the Lemmy edition bass was back in the day?

That date on the RIC news item about Lemmy's Limited Edition Bass might be incorrect. For what it's worth, I seem to recall the 4004LK being introduced around 2001.

I believe the MSRP was $2799. I ordered mine in January of '01 for $1799 and received it in mid-'05.

As far as pickup selection goes in stock configuration the three position toggle is mid and neck/all three/bridge.

The carving was all done by hand so no two are perfectly alike. Most are similar in pattern but at least one has a completely unique layout. Here are a few closer pics of the carving on mine........

The Lemmy was first listed on the Dec. 15 1995(!) price list for $2429 (!!). It was listed in the Jan. 1 1998 for $2799, not listed in the Jan 2000 list, then reappeared in the Jan. 2001 list for $2799 again. It appears that 2001 was the first year for production, and early ones had pickups in a more crowded position. Like the Cheyenne II and Laredos of the early '00s, the pickups were set closer to the bridge than before. So imagine the bass and treble pickup positions of an '01 Cheyenne and slide a third pickup right in between. Most Lemmy's appear to have been made in the 2003-06 time period, with the pickups spread out; the bass pickup abuts the fingerboard, the bridge pickup about an inch from the bridge, and the middle one a bit closer to the bass pickup than the half-way point. (Does my description make sense?) :?

That photograph looks like it's from the NAMM Show in 2001. In an earlier post, I recalled that year (2001) with the Lemmy model and I most likely made the association because of the NAMM Show appearance.

Apparently the RIC run did not include the bridge pickup cover, differentiating it from the bass that Lemmy is holding on the magazine cover.

I appreciate the info. Thanks.
