I'm wondering if there are any 4002 players out there, what 4002s generally go for and how often they pop up for sale. I've never seen one for sale and have read nothing but good things about them. Thanks in advance for any replies or information

As I suspected. They're one of those things you can read lots of online reviews about written by happy owners yet never lay eyes on yourself. There's a real mystique there.

They are all that they are cracked up to be and more.
The thin neck, checkered binding, walnut wings, bound head stock, and ebony fret board are awesome.
Some people say, due to the extra wood that’s not routed by the neck (because of the pick up placement), the sound is much richer.
The 21st fret is neat too,

Everything dswp says about the 4002 is true. He has my old 4002, and I miss it. It has the most beautiful birds eye, in the body, and the ebony fretboard is to die for.
If you are lucky enough to find one for sale, BUY IT!
IMHO the 4002 with the HB pickups is the nicest sounding and playing RIC bass there is.
I have a 4004L BBR on order to help replace the lost of the 4002. I love the sound of the RIC HB's.
Now only if Mr. Hall would sell some of the remaining 4002's he has stached away, I would be first on the list to order one. They would make a great 75th anniversary edition.

I think they were made between 1977 to 1982.
Production of them???

i first played my 4002 in 1982. it was owned by a fellow band member. he offered to sell it to me, but at the time i just couldn't afford it. 9 years later, the guy who did buy it, called me in a panic for $$$$$$$ and wanted to sell the bass that nite......so off to his house with a bag of cash i go..........next day he called and offered me big bux to buy it back.........i turned down his offer..........
mine is a birdseye walnut......and i use it with a 68 fender bassman...........i use an EQ with mine to give me the warmth and sustain i usually look for........and as always..........it's a pleasure to play.......
