I have a 78 4001s (lefty), and the fretboard is a very reddish wood. Is this a type of rosewood or something else?

It appears to be the typical bubinga, a type of rosewood. Most Rick basses have this type of wood. Sometimes you see very light versions of it, sometimes dark, but they are usually reddish. Current production basses have switched over to Caribbean rosewood which is browner but may have more "figuring" (fancy wood grain).

Bubinga is called "African Rosewood," but it is NOT a member of the dalbergia genus, as are Brazilian, Indian, Cocobolo, etc. Bubinga is Guibourtia demeusei of the family Leguminosae. Moreover, chechen, which RIC is now using, is Metopium brownei, also NOT a dalbergia genus rosewood.

This type of Rosewood is native to the rain forest regions of sub-Sahara Africa....plant geography 101.
