Back in 1985 I bought a 4001 that was used and in bad shape. It had no jackplate. After many renovations over the years it still plays and sound great. Problem being, when someone asks me what year it is,I don't know what to tell them. Any idea how to tell the year without the jackplate?

Assuming your Bass has still got it's original pots it should be fairly easy to narrow it down to within a couple of years!

Some pictures would be a great help to!

I've got some pictures but I'm afraid the pots had to be replaced after a flooding accident. They were frozen. Here's the only picture I have on this computer.

Well, unless it was a refinished bass, it appears to be a Jetglo with black binding on the body at least. If it has black binding on the neck as well, then I'd guess it is a 4003 from roughly 1985 to 2002. If it has a two-piece (split) pick guard and truss rod adjusters at the body end of the neck, then that would confirm it to be a 4003 from 1980 to maybe early 1986. If it has white binding on the neck but black on the body and has truss adjusters at the headstock, then it is likely a 4001 from 1973 to about 1983, but probably a refin. Hope that narrows it down a bit.

Sometimes the serial number is written in sharpie inside one of the pickup cavities. Try removing the pickguard and/or the bridge pickup at some point and see what (if anything) it says in there!

Looking at the proximity of the neck pick up to the fingerboard and the shape of the top horn, I would guess that this bass was manufactured between late 73 to around 75.

But that is only a guess. Paul pointed to a good lead on the binding/truss rods.

If it is the original TRC and it is a plastic one with raised letter (instead of plexi with painted letters), my guess is absolutely wrong...
