I need to pull the truss rods to check them on my 4001.

Do the truss rods come out of the headstock end of neck, or are they pushed through and removed from body end of neck?

Tried to pull them out from head end and they didn't budge.

Help?

I pulled mine out through the headstock on my '73 4001. Are yours bent down? If so you need to carefully bend them up first, but not before clamping the neck between the nut and the first fret to prevent the fingerboard from popping off.

The treble side is slightly bent down.

I took off the strings, removed nameplate, removed nuts from end of truss rods, removed the guide/brace thing, and tried pulling on the rod - wouldn't budge.

I saw a post on rickresource.com that had truss rod replacement on a 4003, with people taking them out from the body side, hence the question.

So how much force is required to pull the truss rod out?

I think I have a broken treble side truss rod, because the nut on truss rod is as loose as it can go, and that side of the neck is bowed down past being straight, instead of bowed up like it should be. This is twisting the neck of my 4001.

Any ideas?

It may take a bit of force, I used pliers to grab them and gently pull them out while slightly bending down on the headstock.

Just a caveat here, but be sure to replace the nut on the end of the rod before using the pliars. I know this sounds like a common sense issue, but it still needs to be said. A pair of Vice Grips will work fine, providing you grip the nut with a gentle force. Too much will distort the nut and present a whole new set of problems. Good luck! -Dr.Phil
