I'm trying to track down some information regarding a walnut color I had custom ordered (or so I thought) for my 4001 in about 1973. I remember taking a color sample into the factory and they did (as usual) an excellent job matching it. However, I never was certain if: (A) - they already had a walnut color (no shading or glow) available, (B) - had plans to introduce it, or (C) - (most unlikely) decided that it looked good on my bass and so decided to offer it.
Could one of the historical experts set me straight as to what colors were normally available in '72-'73?
BTW, I had to sell the bass a few years later, and really would like to find it (impossible?) or one like it (maybe?).

I think it may be hard to determine which came first on the overall walnut color. It may have been a custom order such as yours suggests that started it all, or you could have been "parallel thinking" along with others. Standard colors in 1972 would have been the evergreen Jetglo, Fireglo, and Mapleglo, along with Burgundy, Azureglo, and White started up around that time. It's hard to determine exactly when a color started out without scouring company records (which we can't do), and even then, there may not be records regarding color experimentation and acceptance. About the only official stuff we have are order sheets which list the available colors at the time of their printing. The full story (as far as I can determine it) on the Walnut/Autumnglo/Brown colors is in the book.

Thanks for the info, Paul.
And so... where do I get your book? The usual channels like Amazon?
