You'll note the the treble pickup mounting plate (the bar below the pickup itself) is already predrilled to mount a humbucker, toaster, or HiGain. It's been that way sometime in the 1980's when I had those added specifically for this purpose.

As to the 4001/4003 pot question, both have the same. 250k for volume and 500k for tone.

Wise choice :) Though if my mid-70s 4001 still has its original treble pickup mounting plate (which it may, unless it was replaced before I got the bass in '95) it probably predates that change. Still, it hopefully shouldn't be rocket science to make any necessary modifications ....

Thanks for that! Looks like I'd be in good shape there. Alas, the "Boutique" pages lists the HB1 as "Temporarily Unavailable", but perhaps I can find some elsewhere (I'm assuming the 4004s use two identical HB1s in bridge and neck position?) or they'll be back in stock at Rickenbacker.com by the time I've saved up my pennies :)

Not to be bitchy, but why buy a RIC and change it up, This I dont understand. If you like the hb1's buy a 4004, It doesnt make since to me to buy a 4003 and F it up. Just my opinion and it is not pointed at anyone. :)

Just don't alter YOUR basses. To each their own preferences.

If you like humbuckers you could try seymour duncan'ss srb1n and srb1b or bartolini's 6RC and 6RT. They are made to fit the 4001/4003. bartolini even has a model that substitutes the mute so you could have the two original single coils PLUS a humbucker.

Has anyone ever done this mod? Where they take out the mute and add the Bart humbucker? Any pics? I am having a hard time visualizing what that configuration looks like-Are there wires leading from the bart pup into the treble pup caivity? What does this bart humbucker mute pad replacment pup sound like????

I'm having a hard time understanding WHY you would do this?

Just to get a different sound plus less noise.

Some folk like the sound of the 4004 and the quiet operation of HBs but prefer the look of the 4003, so their answer is to get some HBs and switch out the higains. There will be some difference as the pickup placements are not the same, but the sound of an HB-equipped 4003 will be substantially different to standard.

I prefer the look and feel of the 4004 models, but like the look of the vintage 4001's better. I've moded two 4004's cosmetically and elecronically to resemble 4001S models. The bridge pickup route had to be filled first to keep pickup placement the same. One has unbuttoned high gains with toaster covers and the other the original HB's. I used 500K CTS pots in the single coil bass and it cuts through like a chainsaw.

I have a full set of the Bartolini Ric pickups ... the neck, the middle, and the mute cavity pickup ...

they are nice pickups but they don't sound as good as the Rickenbacker pickups ...
