Sticking a pickup in the mute assembly sounds like risky business. I don't trust luthiers to do much of anything completely right, and that is something I would trust neither myself nor any one of them to ever, ever do.

The Bart mute pickup requires a small amount of wood removal to install ...

Is there a wire leading from the bart pup to the treble pup cavity or what? How do you blend it with the other two pup's?

the easy way is to wire it into one of the 2 volume pots ... you can also add a 3rd volume pot or a toggle switch ...

If you like humbuckers you could try seymour duncan'ss srb1n and srb1b or bartolini's 6RC and 6RT. They are made to fit the 4001/4003. bartolini even has a model tha substitutes the mute so you could have the two original single coils PLUS a humbucker.

If this would be a copy, I'd go with Bartolini's as well.

But I do want to keep it all RIC with as valuable and beautiful an instrument as the 4003.

Thanx for the input though.

GH

Would you suggest changing the pots out on either of the 3rd party p/u's?

Just looking at the schematics for the 4003 & 4004 it seems all the pots (vol & tone) are 330K. - fyi

The difference is the impedance loading due to their being pots in parallel on the 4003, so if you want a 4003 to sound like a 4004 you have to bump up the resistance a bit, at least on your volume pots. I don't think tone is that big of a deal. In any case my 4003 with HB-1s uses 500K volume pots.

...The 4003 comes stock with 250k volume pots and 500k ohm tone pots ... to make the bass a little warmer swap out the tone pots for 250k ohm pots ... this works nicely on a 4001 bass with the 8k ohm high gain pickups and the toaster pickups as well ...

How about the 4001v64?

a 4003 owner can purchase 2 hb1 pickups and install them ... you will need a little skill with a screw driver and a soldering iron ... you will have to purchase a couple of extra screws and nuts from your hardware store ... also I would suggest that you install 500k volume pots ... with the existing 250 volume pots your 4003 will sound a little dark with the hb1 pickups ...

also the current 4003 high gain is a single coil 11k ohm pickup and the 4004 hb1 is a dual rail series humbucker that is 15k ohm ...

try a hb1 pickup in the bridge and a toaster in the neck on your 4003 ... one pickup will be nasty and one will be smooth ...

In 2010 a 4003 will come with 330k ohm pots. That may work just fine with the Ric humbuckers. From 1990 to about 2005 the 4003 came with all 250k ohm pots. Before 1990 the 4001 and 4003 had 250k ohm volume pots and 500k ohm tone pots.
