As to the 4001/4003 pot question, both have the same. 250k for volume and 500k for tone.

That PDF shows 330K pots for all four.

The 330 kohm pots work just fine with HB-1 humbuckers. But if you must have that barely noticable bit more of resonant peak from a 500 kohm pot, unsolder the lug that is grounded to the pot casing, and install a 170 kohm resistor between the lug and the ground. Then the circuit will "see" the same loading as with a 500kohm pot.

4001 basses did not come with 330k ohm pots. Ric started using 330k ohm pots about 2005/2006 range.

My 4001 and 4003 both have 4001 wiring spec: 250K Volume and 500K tone. I built up the 4003 wiring harness myself, with orange drop caps and CTS pots.

I currently have my HB-1 in the neck position of the 4003, but would I get a better sound with more overall beefiness AND growl, if I put the HB-1 to the bridge, and the 11k hi gain back to the neck? Having read this thread, it seems that 250K vol pots may not be appropriate for an HB1. so would it best to change up just the volume pot for the HB1 to say 500K, and leave the hi-gain volume pot at 250k?

Apologies to those who also see this question in another forum!

Those pots are going to load each other down in the mono circuit. Two 250Ks in parallel = 125K final value. One 250K + one 500K = 188K. Two 500Ks in parallel = 250K. Since it would be weird to have two totally different volume sweeps and because HB-1s in series wiring need a bit "bigger" pot to sound brighter, I'd go with two 500Ks. An 11 k Hi-Gain is also pretty hot and benefits from bigger resistance pots.

I have taken it too far however... decrease the load too much the volume/tone sweeps are much too fast and the final tone is fairly brittle and unforgiving.

I tend to have all my knobs up at 10 anyhow! and the selector in the middle) - everything on full!

So - 500k pots then for volume and tone! Earlier in this thread, I saw a comment that 250k pots for tone would make the sound a bit warmer - so simple - swap the vol and tone pots over!

Actually - I may just stick 2 HB1s in the 4003, and put 2 x 11k hi gains in the 4001. Save a lot of hassle!

Just seen these - 390K - may be absolutely perfect for the hi-gain hb-1 combo!
