I had to share in my excitement here..

It's not everyday you find a shop that has 11 boxes of sealed vintage Rickenbacker S4440 Flatwounds they are just taking up room in the store and they want to get rid of... but today that happened to me... SCORE!!!!!!

I'd like the know the gauge of the S4440 set, I've heard that it was 112/77/50/40, but I wonder if they varied over the years? any confirmation here from Ric? I've also heard the E string was 105?

I've used TI and Optimas for years so I'll report back when I get a chance to use them, but straight away it's obvious which string is closer on inspection.

Tried to upload a pic but couldn't seem to do it???

I had those Ricky factory installed Maximas on my original '72 4001[ checkerboard and toaster ], and they sounded and played simply great! Just an incredible touch, feel, and sound! Closest I could find would be TI flats, but the Maximas were even better.

Optima now has a set of 45-57-77-100 that, according to the YouTube sound clips I have heard, sound to me very, very similar in tone, articulation and character, and are supposed to be the closest approximation yet to what they say are "original" (whatever that means in whatever context) OEM Maximas.

Hi Pilmar...and welcome to the forum.

What sort of budget had you in mind and would you also want to hunt with your new rifle?
