I have a 4001 bass that I bought 2nd hand from the original owner in 1971 maybe early 72. I was told when I bought it that the year it was bought you could get factory modifications and that they had been done. The bass was stolen the next year but I got it back about 8 years later because of the modifications. I was told by Rickenbacker that not many were modified. The serial numbers were removed when it was stolen. I am trying to find out when it was made and what the serial number is, if possible. The bass has checkerboard binding and crushed pearl neck inlays and it seems compared to other 4001 basses that it is a little smaller body. Just wondering what exact modifications were done. I can see some obvious differences. Any info or help would be great.

Photos would help, but you may not have luck posting here. Check inside the control cavity. Some basses (especially later ones) had the serial inked in the cavity by hand. There may be some other hints as to the construction time frame that can be gathered by studying the structure and equipment fitted, but if there have been mods, that may complicate the matter. Best we might be able to do is a rough time frame. Anyway, I might be able to help if I can see photos. You could email me at airflower2 AT icloud DOT com (replace the usual).

Very unlikely there was a factory-undersized body.

I have a Washburn Vulture Bass, double pick-up, and am looking for info on it. I've heard they are rare and they must be because I can't find anyone with info on them. Thanks very much,,,,
