Does anyone know if there were different neck profiles on the 4001/3's, through the years? I've only played a '74 model 4001 I had for 6yr, but now want a C64 and hope it's profile is similarly creamy. Was there a "small, fast one" or were all fairly consistent? (I have Homer Simpson fingers and need to know!) Thx

Most of the 60's Basses had a wide,flatter neck. Shapes of the neck profile has changed over the years. Rounder and thicker was the 70's 4001. The re-issue models are patterned after the originals so I would suggest you play some before buying one off the internet so you know what you will be getting.

Thx, DaleF. I was afraid of that - another variable in the mix, that is. -kinda sounds like a new C64's profile would be a tad bigger than my old '74 model (which was perfect for me). I'll have to percolate more on this. I'd love to compare 'em, but, Arkansas isn't exactly the land of opportunity for trying out Ric's. This may put a dent in my quest for no binding, dots, toaster/horseshoe, MG preference. I'll keep reading everyone's posts, though, and narrow down the search. Thx, again.

My 1989 4001V63 neck is very close to what my old 1976 4001 was. Nice,slim and very easy to play. The neck profiles are different on those from year to year too, from what I've been told. I would expect the necks on the 4001C64 basses to be very consistant though. Mine is fantastic to play, and sounds great. I had to wait a while to get it, but it was well worth it!

That kinda brings up another question: Only now getting back into the market I don't know the differences between the V63 and the current C64. Seems like both had dots, no binding, and toaster/horseshoe. Are there any other differences?

The C series guitars and basses are the most accurate reproductions of the original models. And the V series is not made anymore, I believe.

Answers it for me. Now, to get on with selling gear...

The C64's reversed headstock. Otherwise at least AFAIK they seem pretty close.

Don't forget we now have the 4001C64 and a 4001C64S. The latter comes in a satin MG finish with a zero fret and rounded off horns...

Were it not for the pauly-sanded horns, I'd be going for the S to get the zero-fret. The original/accurate/sacred 4000 body shape is more important to me. Heritage, man. If I'm saving/spending this kind of money, I want "a real one". Pauly's great and all, but...
