Well folks---we know the famous bassists who use Rics and we can identify one when hear them right? Maybe the rest of you can never be fooled, but I recently found I can be.

For you Gov't Mule fans, this pertains to the first two cuts on the "Dose" album (er, CD---do I show my age?), "Blind Man In The Dark" and "Thorazine Shuffle". Allen Woody has been noted as playing Gibsons, particularly the Thunderbird. Now the soundof the bass on the above two songs just sounds great, and I always attributed it to the Thunderbird. I just read a Warren Haynes interview that stated that Allen played a Ric on those two numbers. No wonder the bass sounds so good! Just goes to show that you ought to let your ears tell you and not allow preconceived ideas tell you what you're hearing!

The bass sounds great on both those tracks I wouldn't have guessed it was a Ric either. Now that you say that I will go and have another listen.

My 1980 4003S sounds like anything you want it too, except a Ric!!! I can boom with the P's, or mellow with the T-birds!

I'm a huge Allen Woody fan :) and I wouldn't have guessed Ric on those tracks either -- though I've always loved the tone. When I'm messing around with settings, I always go back to the bass on the intro to "Blind Man in the Dark" and A/B myself against that! Little did I know ....

Where was the Warren interview?

I believe I got it from the Gibson USA website.

Found it: http://www.gibsonbass.com/allenwoody.php

Hope I'm allowed to post that link here ;) but there _is_ a Ric bass featured centre-right on the photo at the top of the page :)

Whoops---yeah, gibsonbass.com. Nice Rics up front. Those two numbers (Thorazine Shuffle and Blindman In The Dark) have such a wonderful bass sound---they stood out to me out of all of the rest of the basses on the album. Figures it was a Ric. I'll have to check out the Ric sounds on the Life Before Insanity CD mentioned by Haynes.
