i have an older model 4003 which is a dream to play. i've been collecting basses for 35 years. i own a bunch of alembics and other active basses. my 4003 has always been a match for those, sonically, thru my trace elliot heads and cabs. however, my brand new 4004cii trans blue is almost muted next to all of my other passive basses. obviously, it needs hotter electronics. i have to double my amp settings to approximate the output of my other basses, but not my 4003, which despite being a passive bass absolutely keeps up volume-wise w/my active electronics alembics and sukops, etc. anyone have any suggestions? this 4004cii trans blue is nice and feels good, but the electronics, in my opinion, are woefully poor and inadequate. i need help. and, yes, i've had a pro setup, including intonation which i painstakingly performed myself to further improve on the prosetup. if you want it done right, do it yourself, right? i just think the pickups and electronics in these 4004's are woefully inadequate, but they are the most beautiful things on earth.

I have a trans red CII, (hence the username), I agree that its very different sounding compared to my 4003's and my V63, but I've never had a problem with output.

found some helpful hints under a different thread involving 4001's. i simply turned each of the center screws counterclockwise and raised the pickups. this helped greatly. the pickups were screwed all the way down to the lowest, apparently factory, settings. now, i'm getting much more volume and attack.

get the strings closer to the pickups ... if you do want to modify your 4004 then leave in the pickups and try rewiring the pots as volume, volume, tone ... use 500k ohm pots ... or if you want it really hot try 1000k ohm pots ... or try a bass pod ...
