Hey. I have a question - is the cream finish (which I believe is called white......?) discontinued and if so when was this? I've seen a few on ebay and I want one but they date from the 80s. If they were discontinued that long ago then living here in the uk how likely do you think it is that I will be able to get one? I have a blue boy on reserve though for if I can't! I guess it might be one of those guitars I'll always have to look out for.
Also, what kind of amps do you all use? Bass amps are something which I know nothing about. Generally I really like the sound of the Rolling Stones (Miss You), the Stone Roses and bluesy rock. Thanks!

"amp for 4003 and white finish?!"

You realize, of course, that the sound characteristics will change if you decide, for example, to get a bass with a different color. For instance, an Ampeg SVT sounds it's best with a Jetglo bass, where as an SWR usually sounds best with Fireglo, except on rainy Tuesdays, in which case, a Mapleglo bass, especially a '60s or at best, early '70s 4001S, will give the best tone.

For a White 4003, may I suggest you look into a Gallien-Krueger, the later, the better, like a 1001RB-II (these sound their best with the new Neo 412 cabinets, unless your White has yellowed somewhat, for those try the 410RBH cabinets).

Jeffrey, I have to disagree with ya, SWR sounds awesome with Jetglo, mapleglo, midnight blue, trans red and burgundy too!! ;-)

Sorry Joey, I didn't mean to diss you on the SWR color choices! ;^)

Digsy84, I am pretty sure your Blue Boy will get you the sound you are looking for with an SVT.

That okay Jeffrey, you might not have heard those colors though an SWR rig yet.
You guys should hear how great ALL the colors sound through my Rickenbacker RB120 bass amp.

ampeg makes some good bass rigs ... I am yearning for a 4003 in white with black trim ... the problem with the white finish is the yellowing to a cream color with age ... I may have to get a 4003 white with black trim and get it refinished ...

Also Rickenbacker is not currently making white instruments ...

Digsy,
My 4003 Blue Boy played through my SVT CL just rocks the house with tone and rumble. But my 85 white 4003 sounds better played directly through a PA...My white 4003 also seems to weigh much less than the BB. I still have the factory strings on the BB and use Thomastik/Enfields on the White bass.

Tubes are the way to go. I use an Ampeg V4-B and a Vox AC-50. Great sound out of my 4001. The Vox was made for a Ric.

My 4003 FG sounds much better than my Fenders do on an Ashdown amp. I'm still looking for an amp that will make my Jazz sound like my Ric 8^)
