I like the cover to be on. It's a nice handrest for pick playing, and when playing with my fingers, it's a good thumb-anchor.

Yes John...You were one of the very few voices of reason on that site, and I appreciated you moderating some out-of-hand postings.

So far I've bought all three of the 4001's I've owned second-hand. The first two did not include the pickup cover. The third one did, but by then I was used to having it off so I took it off.

Awhile-back Mr. Hall posted that there was a simple modification to put the cover underneath the strings. He said it would be posted on the website somewhere. I can't find his initial post though. I've looked carefully at the possibilities but nothing is obvious

I don't have a Ricky bass yet, but I think the "sweet spot" for me is right above the bass pickup. How hard is it to remove the cover from the treble pickup from a v63 or C64?

On those you basically can't. The "cover" is actually part of the pickup, not an accessory, if I recall correctly. Look at the parts diagrams on the site. Any of the RIC people would know.

I personally love the "cover" because its great for placing your thumb on it to play with your fingers or use it as a handrest for picking. It is a Rickenbacker....it will always sound beatiful.

I had always taken the cover off of my ric basses and picked over the treble pup. But I recently got a 4001c64s and decided to try it with the horseshoe pup intact. I am loving the horseshoe pup. I turn it down a tad so most of the (amazing) tone I am getting comes from the toaster...

BUT... the metal horsehoe/cover makes me pick closer to the neck. The strings are more floppy there, and I am therefore picking lighter. The sound is just so supple.

I hope to get a horseshoe for my 4003 now! The one piece cover just doesn't look as good as the metal cover with the slit in the middle.
