i know the new ones are plastic with copper shielding and chrome coverd, but wern't they once made of metal? and would it be possible to get a metal one to fit the new 4003's ? thanks

You mean the cover for the treble pickup? They have been plastic for a long time. I have two 1973 4001's and they are chrome plated plastic.

Why would you need a metal one?

I've never even seen a picture of a metal one. Unless you're talking about the wraparound magnets on the vintage treble pickups.

I have heard that for a short time they did indeed have metal covers... this was probably right after replacing the horseshoe pickup with the high gains... since the cover just imitates the look of the horseshoe magnet.

I've never seen one though... I think they are extremely rare. I don't think there would be any benefit from using a metal cover anyway.

the metal ones are very rare ... most are plastic ... and most get removed ...
