What do you prefer?
Finger playing, pick playing, or both?

I think I'm like 80% pick and 20% finger playing.

So what do other Rickenbacker player's prefer?

(silly question maybe, but I would like to get to know what other Ric bass players prefer...)

I play both with a pick and finger style. I'm playing more finger style these days because of the song choices my band plays. I'm probably 60% pick 40% finger. A couple of years ago it was probably 85% pick. When I started it was 100% finger style. You get two totally different sounds. It's nice to be able to go back and forth. BTW I use a red Tortex .50mm pick. Pretty thin for bass but I find I'm much faster with it and it has a smoother sound than a thick pick.

I was just thinking about this last night on my gig. I sometimes feel like I'm the last player in the Western world who uses a pick, which I do about 99% of the time. Too old to chnage now- I'll be 44 this week!

I'm pretty much 100% finger style, although I only used a pick until about the late '70s.

I play with a pick most of the time. I grew up listening to Chris Squire's basslines, so that's where I'm rooted. I prefer the sound of the pick as opposed to the fingers, but like Rikk said, it really depends on what's most appropriate for the song you're playing. I mix it up a bit. I thump & pop, too... also use hammering techniques. It all sounds great on a 4001.

I first learned the Mel Bay thumb pluck method, then I learned 2 finger playing, then I learned pick playing, then I learned thumb slapping, then I learned the Entwistle typwriter method ... I use all of those styles while gigging ... the more styles you know the better equipped you are to play in a cover band ...

if you are a 100% pick player then you have less need for compression and you can set to pickups closer to the strings ... if you are a 100% finger player then you can set the action lower ...

HI, I play with a pick when playing modern music. When I play jazz, I use my fingers.

I like to use a pick on my Ric basses, I think they respond better to a pick than any other bass. On my Zons, I play fingerstyle.
