I just bought a new 4003 FG bass 6 weeks ago. I love it but the chrome is already coming off the pick up cover where I rest the heel of my hand while I play. I don't sweat there or anything. It seems like they are made of metal but it could be plastic. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything I can do?
Thanks!!!

This is not typical. Logically, your first course of action should be to speak with customer service here, tel 714-545-5574 or email service@rickenbacker.com.

Related point of information: I recently ordered a 4003 pickup cover from the factory, and it came with the chrome loose and ready to flake off down at the "L" joint. After talking with the folks at Customer Service, I sent it back, got another brand new one: same problem, same place! I called again, and customer service said they'd get back to me but never did. I finally just gave up, it was only a $15 piece and I can probably pick up a used older one on Ebay someday, but it really seems like there may be a defect in the chroming process of that part in recent shipments. You might want to check into it.

I've seen the chrome come off the covers, but only after years of wear. I would get a replacement from Ric right away, the finish is defective.

Hello, I own a 78' 4001 and a 05' 4003. It seems to me that the pick guard on the 4003 is plastic and chrome does not hold well to plastic. Now for my 78' 4001 the chrome is in perfect condition for a 28 year old bass and I believe the guard is metal. Please correct me at anytime if I am incorrect.I personally think the older basses are made MUCH better.Do not get me wrong, I would not play any other bass. Rickenbacker is the cream of the crop.

Chrome comes off of metal, too.

There's no question that chrome was better in the past. Hexavalent chrome was the standard process used for most everything. Thanks to the EPA and environmental regulations, that process is not longer feasible and the trivalent process has become the standard.
Those kind of regulations came into effect in Japan first and it was easy to see the bumpers on all Japanese cars during from being bright one year to a gray looking chrome the next, or simply painted.

The EPA won't let you do black, they won't let you do chrome. Those buncha sissy tree huggers.
