I bought a '79 ric 4001 about 6 months ago, just had a local luthier level the frets due to some grooves in a few frets. The previous owner had improperly tried to adjust the neck and bent the truss rods, which are now straight. He also informed me that the threads are in bad shape on one of the rods. It holds fine, but I want to repair/replace it. I noticed in the boutique section that there is a truss rod assembly offered. Will this work for my bass? Or am I better off cutting and working with what I have?

The rods offered in the boutique are for instruments made after September 1984. There's no downside to cutting a bit off the existing rods and rethreading them. The tail end of the rods isn't doing anything anyway.
