Hi,

My '65 330/12 has what I believe are mix of original and non-original tuners, but before I change the non-originals out I wanted to confirm my suspicion with the board.

Six of my tuners are marked "Kluson Deluxe." These are the ones that feed into the head from the sides. The other six are marked "Ric Deluxe" and they feed in from the back.

The Ric Deluxe set has shafts that are about an 1/8th inch taller than the Klusons. (In the photo below, the last vertical tuner shaft to the right is a Kluson, while the rest of the vertical ones are Rics.)

Image

On the Rics, you'll see there's ample clearance between the hole for the string and the head stock grommet. On the Kluson, you'll see the hole is just above the grommet.

While the Ric actually looks like a better design in terms of string clearance, all the photos of original '65/'66 headstocks that I've found have the shorter clearance.

I have six Klusons ready to replace the six Rics, but before doing so I wanted to confirm that the shorter Klusons are indeed what should be in those positions.

If other owners of mid-'60s 330/12s could check their guitars and let me know, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks,

John

John,

My '68 360/12 has all shorter Kluson Deluxe tuners.

John,

The Klusons are original and correct, even though they are short.

RIC Deluxe tuners are of recent vintage, and come in both short and long versions.

Thanks for your response as well. I'll be installing the Klusons tonight.

Next on the list: tracking down an original truss rod cover. (Been watching eBay, missed a good one. Contacted the factory about the version they use on the reproduction of Harrison's 360, but the shape is slightly different on that early model versus the '65. Also, the '65 should say Made in USA, which the repro doesn't.)

Watch out for counterfeits sold out of Italy. I think these have been turning up less frequently on Ebay, but they still show up from time to time.

They are fairly easy to spot. Briefly, if they look "wrong" (one tip is that the Rickenbacker script looks too thin, and often the MADE IN USA is too small, too large, or unclear), they are counterfeit. There are also molded white TRCs with black letters that are counterfeit.

You're looking for a silkscreened "vintage style" TRC that looks its age.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been reading up on those fakes. Sadly, I had a '67 Rick project that I sold just before I got the '65. The '67 had a nice original TRC that I would have transferred over to the '65. Live and learn.
