Hello, folks.
After about a 15 year hiatus of being sans Ric, I recently purchased a 4001 project. From what I can tell, it dates to the spring of '73:
-Wavy Grovers
-Checkerboard binding
-Toaster up front
-Plexi TRC
-Mexico CTS pots from March 1973 ("Mexico 137 7312")
Unfortunately, the original jackplate with serial number is long gone. So, it's a bit of a mystery as to the exact age.
The bass was sanded and is ready for a refin (I'm hoping to have someone with experience -- i.e., not me -- do the resto). Since my first legit bass was a '73 4001 Jetglo, I was hoping to go in that direction. But, inside the control cavity there is some writing in pencil that I want to decode in case the bass was originally a different color. It could be read in one of two ways:
4001-C ag (with the "ag" in lowercase cursive); or
4001-Jag
Does this mean anything to anyone? I was thinking that perhaps "ag" referred to Azureglo or Autumnglo, but the control cavity and the truss rod cavity appear to have black in there.
Any input is appreciated!

That 4001 was probably made in June or July '73.
ATG was the acronym for Autumnglo as was AZG for for Azureglo. Could have been shortened for either or it was the initials of someone who worked on it as it was built in the factory.

Either color (Autumn-glo or Azure-glo) would look great with the bass, and so would Amber Fire-glo. I always liked the checkerboard binding, too. I wonder if the black paint was for shielding purposes? I've seen some Strats with black shielding paint in the body cavities.
