Hello all

Just got a 4001. My dad actually gave it to me so im a lucky chap. What im thinking of doing is getting it restored. Its a '74 jetglo, the bridge pick up has gone, I think it needs a rewind. The old grover machine heads are in bad shape and will need replacing. Don't mind the newer schallers i think they look great but if possible would like to keep it as original looking as possible. To me the guitar is priceless, i'll never get rid of it so i'm not bothered if the value goes down. I am really keen to get it looking the same as when my dad bought it back in '74. The bass has lost its shine and the finish looks quite dull and flat. On the back of the body in the middle are some fairly deep scratches where it has rubbed on his belt buckle. On the back of the neck around the 3rd and 5th frets are also deep scratches which i assume was caused by his wedding rings. The neck is straight but it maybe needs a re fret. The rest of the bass appears to be in good shape, with no splits etc. Any comments on this would be very much appreciated and if anybody knows anyone in London or the UK who could restore it to its former glory i would be very grateful for putting me on to them. I've seen some of the restoration jobs on this forum and I would be after the same high standards as these. I contacted Rosetti (the UK Ric dealer) but they told me to ask at music shops as they dont deal with restorations. I will enquire in my local shops and dealers but i thought I'd start here first.

There are a couple luthiers here that may give you some decent quotes. Check the other threads.

This is typical work for both Dale and me, but we are on the West Coast of the USA. Maybe some of our esteemed Forum members in the UK could chime in and recommend a good Rick luthier on that side of the pond?

That having been said, we do this sort of work for anyone who is willing to ship the guitar or bass the distance.

I'll have a good scour round London and wait for more replies on here. Obviously I'd prefer the work to be done in the UK as I don't really want to ship the bass overseas. However, if I have no luck over here I'll probably be in touch as I have seen your work and I am mightily impressed.

Try talking to Mike Smith at 'Rics R Us' in Birmingham. Their luthier there does restorations.

He may be able to help. There is an example restoration of a Rick guitar on the website.
They only deal with Ricks.
