I have an original 330 that I purchased in the mid-seventies. It has some rough spots, particularly on the back from buckle wear. Does re-finishing a guitar lower the value or does it help increase it? Thanks-RON

Most older Gibsons and Fenders will bring top dollar if they are original in finish and hardware. Ricks are different as they can bring top dollar for a restored/refinished instrument if done to original factory specs...

I totally agree Dale. An old beat up Tele or Strat looks way cool. It gives them character. In fact people are paying around $3,000 for a custom shop Strat that looks like it is 30- 40 years old. However, I consider a Rick to be a true work of art and could never let mine get in that condition. I know that I baby it alot, BUT ITS MY BABY!!

MY RULE OF THUMB, I NEVER WEAR A BUCKLE OR SHIRT WITH BUTTONS WHILE PLAYING ANY OF MY BASSES. THE FINISH ON MY 65 P-BASS IS STILL THE WAY IT WAS WHEN IT CAME OUT OF THE FACTORY.

Yow that was loud! No need to shout.

With my overhang, I don't need to worry about buckle-rash! :D Natural cushion!

If I'm wearing a belt, I move the buckle around to the side when I play.

i think the question is "should he re-finish is guitar?" and i think anyone can look at it 2 ways

1) if your looking to make money off your ric, re-finishing it will bring down the value, no question, ken from sales actually told me that on another thread

and

2) if your planning to keep this ric, then go ahead! it's your guitar who cares if it brings down the value a bit? if you want to start fresh from a used guitar its not that taboo of an idea

so the ball is in your court if your planning on an investment then leave it be, and dont add any more wear to it, and if your going to keep it, then go nuts!

A professional, factory spec refinish by someone like DaleFortune or Jingle_jangle will not necessarily bring down the value. But a lot of buckle rash will.
