I know I have had conversations with John in the past that would indicate that this is not going to happen. I still can't really speak for him though.

So *that's* the amp that Michael J. Fox plays through at the start of Back To The Future!!! I always wondered what it was.:-)

One bass bottom had four 15" JBL speakers and the grandaddy of them thad a single 30" Electrovoice driver.

That's the Rickenbacker Transonic Series 200 amplifier with 350 watts peak power.

Back in '73 I was getting a new Marshall 50w head.
I saw the Transonic in the shop and even then I was struck by how cool it looked. I recall admiring the nice wood plate the head was fastened to. Passed it up for $300. Hindsight......

I wonder if Rickenbacker could license old designs to another company. Or, maybe buy the rights to the old Music Man amp line and build those along with Rick amps, but re-badge the MM amps.

Or afterwards, but back to before when he started? Man, this time-travel stuff is confusing... I blame H.G. Wells. He stole the idea from Ray Bradbury anyway.

Richard Smith discusses the Transonic amps in his Rickenbacker book fairly extensively. Interesting shots of Led Zeppelin (?!?) in the Rick factory.

To illustrate what kind of deal that might have been, the list price of a new Rickenbacker TS 200 amp in 1973 was $1,345.

If you go to see the new documentary "It Might Get Loud", you will get a look at a Rick Transonic in the background when Jimmy Page is playing at his home. There is also some footage of The Jam playing their RICs when The Edge is recalling his seminal influences. You also will see his 330 behind him among many other guitars. This is a great movie, by the way. It also features Jack White.

There's an unofficial Rick amp site that seems pretty well documented -- it's an honest effort anyway, and on Transonics it states that Led Zeppelin left their Transonics here after their 1st US tour in 1969, and some of those amps were bought by none other than Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick, who still has them. I would think the Transonics were at least on a par with the Thomas Vox solid state amps of that era.

I owned a Transonic 200 from 1978 to 1981 and like a fool I sold it. I will tell you that in the confines of my parents full-house basement (with suspended ceiling)I played my Rick 365 through it and it almost made my ears bleed without turning it up very far. I loved the effects and the styling, as everyone knows, was very distinctive. I bought it used from The Wood Shed in Terre Haute for $545 and it didn't have a scratch or mark on it anywhere. The serial number was 466. I know this because I still have the purchase papers in my Rick's case. I still have the 67 Rick 365 which I still play; I wasn't totally stupid. Lesson learned.
