New to the forum but have owned a '73 4001S since around 1980. The question I have (which cannot seem to be answered by Rickenbacker headquarters) is that someone cut the actual number off the jack plate but left the "MD" on it. I bought this used from a guitar store in 1980 and no one can seem to tell me how to get the number or even how Rick numbered them when built. Any suggestions?
Regards,
Russ

There's no way to know the actual number unless it was written somewhere else in a cavity, which is doubtful. But it doesn't matter as far as the date goes anyway, it's still April '73.

it may have been stolen at some point or the jack plate may be from a different instrument ...
