So, I was learning a song by Type O Negative, and they use a ridiculous tuning, in which the strings are tuned like the bottom 4 strings of a five string bass, so from lowest to highest BEAD. The strings got all floppy of course, and there was some really wonky fret buzz happening, so after learning the song, I slowly tuned back up. Has anyone else ever tried this tuning? Is it incredibly super bad for the instrument?

My bass player buys a 5 string set and tosses the G string.
His bass was set up for this and he has no problems.

That's how I tune my 4-string. Actually, I know several bassists who use that tuning. It eliminates that "thin" sounding G... which we can let the guitarists have, no biggie. It's that low B that gets the booties shakin'.

I've tried it, using the thickest 4 strings from a 5 string set of course. No problems at all.

I've since switched that bass to a heavy gauge 4 string set and tune it C G C F.

I used to just play a 4 string tuned EADG ... then I got in a modern rock band and needed lower notes ... so I had one bass tuned EADG and one tuned to E flat and one tuned DGCF ... but then I just switched to playing 5 string basses and I was ok ... but then you can also tune a 5 string to B flat tuning or some players tune a 5 ADGCF ... but I find the BEADG tuning works fine ... and some players like EADGC for a 5 string bass ... and some other 4 string tunings are CGDA or DAEB

What song? Black #1 is a fun one to play. "You can't go out cuz your roots are showing!"

It was indeed that song, actually :), and yes, it's very fun to play! My band is actually thinking of doing a 20 minute medley of that song and "Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity".

Anyway, to do this tuning more often, seems like I'd have to get much heavier strings, because I use .100's normally. I was just wondering if there was a danger of damaging the neck or something. Thank all of you for your input.

Sartori, remember when you get your 4001 project finished that the 4001 with older truss rods is limited on string tension.

Oh yeah, of course. I'm only going to be tuning that one standard. If I use the BEAD tuning, it will be on one of my other basses, never the 4001.

I used BEAD tuning on a 1975 4001 for 6 months or so. No problems in that time.
