I have a suggestion for your SONY tapedecks (other than for the cool ambiance, I mean): Try using 'em for some vintage "backward guitar" soloing or reverse-vocal masking -- "Cranberry Sauce" comes to mind (unless your computer DAW software can already do that, in which case, never mind :o)

I've done that! My first foray into more complicated Beatles recording started with "I'm Only Sleeping" with its' backwards guitar solo. So I laid down all the basic tracks on my computer, then mixed it down, transfered it to tape on one track, turned the tape over to play it backwards, recorded the two guitar parts on two other tape tracks FORWARDS, then turned the tape around again, copied the two now-backwards guitar tracks down to my DAW, then had to painstakingly move them around in the tracks to get them to both line up properly with the basic music track. It was perfect!

And then, of course, after I went to all that trouble, my recording buddy said, "Well, you know Cool Edit DOES have a 'Reverse Track' function, don't you?" *sigh*

I record using Cakewalk Pro. I run my Ric through a Boss GT-3 effects box and run the GT-3 directly into the PC's sound card. I've had very good results with this setup and have used it on two CD projects. Very simple to setup and tweak.
