I actually have a large Ric Transonic head and cabinet mint for sale. It was owned by a famous rock musician who, unfortunately recently passed away. I've been asked to help the family sell some of his gear. (he has a ton of gear which he took great care of.)It's been in storage in a flight case and I just uncovered it last week. If you're in the Los Angeles area and interested in buying this unique piece, contact me. I don't think I would consider shipping this because of the size.

Solid state amps from that era in general were really good. Think of the big tuck and roll Kustoms that CCR used. Or Acoustics. Common received wisdom has dictated for years that solid state was bad but the actual evidence suggests otherwise.
I would love to find a Transonic amp but I would imagine that they are quite rare outside of California or Jimmy Page's home studio.
Like everything Rickenbacker they are totally distinctive looking.

Not bad, just different. I gave up on tubes for bass amping almost 20 years ago.
The problem is in the design. Unless a solid state amp is designed correctly, instead of the natural compression and sawtooth waveform that happens when tubes are overdriven, creating even harmonics which are subjectively deemed desireable in electric guitar tone, instead the solid state components will simply clip, creating odd harmonics, which are deemed undesireable in electric guitar tone (save discrete germanimum transistors in 1st generation design fuzz boxes). Oversimplified, but the essence of the debate.
Well designed and executed, a good solid state amp will do very well.

I imagine the big output transformers used back then accounted for the better sound too.
Today's SS amps are featherweight. 'Transistor Dinosaurs' like the Transonic had heft.

i recently bought a cool Transonic 100 here in the Boston area (for a little less than $1000, a present to myself!) that only has a few small pulls in the grill cloth, that a tech friend is working on.....such a COOL looking amp, can't wait to fire it up!
