I have a 1974 RIC 4001 that I installed a Dipshot D-Tuner on back in the mid 90's. The D-Tuner (now called Bass Extenders) came with a Gotoh GB7 keywind and was a simple bolt-in replacement, no modifications necessary. :)

However, to keep the headstock looking uniform I installed additional Gotoh GB7 keywinds in the remaining locations which required enlarging the peg holes about 1/16". The original keywinds had bent shafts and the nickel plating was very tarnished. The GB7 keywinds were chrome plated and offered superior performance.

Recently I decided to restore the 4001 and to use the D-Tuner on another instrument. But the original keywinds had too much play in them due to the enlargement when I installed the GB7's. So, I purchased a set of new Schaller BM keywinds which had larger pegs. However, when I went to install the Schaller BM's the the holes, again, were to small by another 1/16" or so! The biggest problem after I enlarged the holes, though, was that the ferrules provided do not clear the truss rod cover on the E and D strings!

So, anyone considering messing around with stock keywinds be sure to do your homework and consider all the dimensions and consequences! Of course, any suggestions on my current dilemma (i.e. how best to resolve the ferrule clearance problem) are appreciated.

Grind the edge of the ferrules where they touch the logo plate? Grind a bump on the logo plate? Have the ferrules truned down to make them fit?

Don't wanna grind the truss rod cover, so I'll probably Dremel the ferrules. Thanks. Still so much work. ARRGHH!

Peg the holes, and redrill them to the correct size (3/8"). Then buy a set of C64 tuners from the Boutique. These tuners are the nicest tuners I've seen for this application, and are a direct replacement for he original Kluson tuners.
