On a similar note, is it possible to drop a horseshoe p/u in a '73 4001? My bridge p/u is totality gone. Neck toaster p/u, perfect.

A lot of people suggest by-passing the cap in order to get the full output of the bridge pickup, which is great, but you do lose that classic tone that the 4001 has. I have fitted the vintage push-pull switch on my '78 4001 so that I can retain the classic growl plus get the more 'modern' sound of both pickups on full output. I would not want to lose the sound you get with the cap as to me this IS the Ric sound!

Change the tone pot, for a ric push/pull pot! That way, you install a genuine Ric component, and have the option of vintage tone or not!
The pot section of the push/pull is rated at 500k, so will be a perfect drop in replacement on a 4001 or an older 4003, where pots were 250/500 for vol/tone respectively!
In the Boutique, or for about 13 quid from the exceedingly helpful Shelly at Rosetti in the UK!

I got my original 4001 rewound by Wizard Pickups in the UK. cost about £40GBP. They can also make it a bit "hotter" for you too,by adding a few more turns of copper, and get the impedance up to modern hi-gain spec of say 10 or 11K http://www.wizardpickups.co.uk/content. ... ge=Repairs

I've ordered the pups. I'm very excited about these. I'm placing a lot of hope on them.

Finally got a Toaster and a Horseshoe installed. I put on a set of flatwounds and got lost in playing for an hour. I've wanted my bass to sound like this ever since I bought it 35 years ago. I may not get the exact Macca Sgt. Pepper tone, but I'm a lot closer to it. I also had the bass sounding like an upright. Incredible tones all around.
Something odd about the toaster pickup. It has 6 pole pieces. I called Rickenbacker, and they said that was right. Sounds great, so it must be.

Yep, guitar and bass toasters are the same. When your flats get dead (like Macca's) you'll get even closer to the sound. Experiment with the mute too.

Been using the mute. I replaced it because the original had dry rotted. It sounds so good with that mute. I need to spray a little WD 40 at the screws because they're tearing up my fingers when I turn them.
