I prefer the original strings on the 4003, Rotosound is not to recommend... I think the gauge 40-95 is best.

I'm a very hard player and the stock strings were like rubber bands. I have D'daddario Chromes 45,65,85,105 on my 4003BB nad they are a definite improvement but they are still not stiff enough

Pinto,
I have elixir 45-100's on my 4001 and I am loving them. They sound a little more mellow than a new set of strings (say rotosounds) but they hold their sound much longer. I avoid using a pick with the strings though (I play 95% fingerstyle anyway)... I don't want to damage the coating.
Also try boiling your old strings... they will sound like new again (or very close). Don't boil elixirs.

The Rotosound flats aren't too bad, if you can get a fresh set. The past few sets I've gotten have had dead strings in them. The Roto RS66 rounds will eat the frets for lunch. I like D'Addario Chromes for flats now, and DR's for roundwounds. The DR's last a good long time and don't wear on the frets, or the fretboard. That's real important to me these days.

Rotosound rounds on everything I've ever had---bright strings, go great with a Ric. Use either RS 66 Swing Bass or the Piano String Designs. 45-65-85-105

I put on some smith rock masters 40-100 lite. With those and a Dipshot bridge, my 4001cs sings! Quite bright for longer than 1 or 2 days unlike some other strings.

Quote: I was looking at Some EB Extra Slinkies (40-60-70-95) or to bring out the low end a bit more, EB Super Slinkies (45-65-80-100) Which EBs? At least their nickel-plated strings are weak on balance (which they haven't been able to improve upon in 25 yrs...), lack low end, though they do have a unique character for which I liked them nevertheless. Quote: I highly reccomend Thomastik or LaBella. Which ones? Jazz Round, Jazz Flat, Superalloy, Powerbass? Deep Talkin' Bass, Slappers, Super Steps? Actually, I've anyway been considering trying some of these on my 4001C64 as I had liked them on some of my other instruments. Could you please describe the sounds you achieved with them on your Ricks? Quote: Are the TI's stiffer than the Ric strings? Jazz Round and Jazz Flat no, Superalloy and Powerbass yes.
