Quote: Interesting... after looking through most of the posts, it seems the majority of basses owned by respondents are vintage or traditional.
I must be on the edges of the curve! I love technology and fresh ideas, but I also repect what works. That's why you'll find I have owned (and so want another) Ricks and a Jazz Bass, but also have had a Steinberger type (no headstock, minimal body), a two-active-EMGs bass (Larrivee) and the Variax bass.
I'm of the whatever works school.
And please don't take this as a "vintage head" bash. If people want their Hofner Beatles basses and such, right on! New stuff rocks!

93 Fender P 79 Fender J 79 Maton JP4 fretless 85 Yamaha 4 string active 00 Warick Fortress 5
Plus my Rick stable 95 4001 and my new baby 05 4003 Blue Burst
I mainly play the maton and fender p for jazz gigs I play hardcore/punk with the yamaha as I has a really small neck and I can play very fast. ( i also dont care if it gets bashed around) Rick only goes out on special occations or controlled places. Marty

Heartfield DR-5 Gibson Ripper Samick 5 string
Had a hideous hot pink Kramer at one time that had made the rounds of several music stores over the years I lived in that particular city. I guess one point in time it was my turn to own it.

I've only got 2 basses (both 5-string) as I can't afford any more just yet!
~1996 Samick Custom Shop Pro 5 in a sort of red-sunburst-type colour (sits in the corner collecting dust...)
1986 4003s/5 (my baby!!) white with black trim. Well, it's not exactly white anymore... more like a creamy colour!
Hoping to get myself another one in Fireglo or Mapleglo if I can find one!

I feel quite inadequate ;-)

In addition to my Ric 4003 I have an arsenal. Here goes: 1981 Washburn Scavenger (I'll never part with it) 1993 Washburn Mercury, strung with rotosound tru-bass 2002 DeArmond Ashbory 198? Dean "Z" Heavily Modified - Sperzel tuners, Duncan 1/4 pund pickup and a Duncan Ric Replacement pickup (Still doesn't sound like a real Ric but it's good). http://web.oosterman.com/revival/sreviv ... Cheyenne, I'd love to see a picture of that Desert Gold 4003. As for me, my "others" are:
'75 Fender P-Bass (Natural Ash; maple board; black pickguard) '75 Fender Vintage Jazz Re-Issue (American 2000 model; natural ash; maple board w/black block inlays and binding; black pickguard) '05 Fender American Series Jazz Bass (Sunset Orange Transparent; rosewood board; ash body; tortoise-shell pickguard) '98 Epiphone Jack Casady (Vintage Sunburst, which they stopped making. I like it much better than the Goldtop or Ebony) 3/4 size Vienna Strings Upright (Hamburg Model; solid spruce top)
Others I've had and sold/traded over the years: Gibson Les Paul bass; numerous (6 or 7) American Fenders; Modulus Quantum 4 Sweet Spot; MusicMan Stingray; Epiphone El Capitans (2); Godin A4; mid-90's Fireglo 4003.

I don't own a Ricky bass quite yet, but it was the very first bass I ever played when I was about 15. It was a '78 4001 MG that I almost bought from some guy...it was great piece of wood.
but, here are my very few basses---
'82 Hofner 500/1 (signed by McCartney on the pickguard--most of ya know the story)
'99 Dano Longhorn-pale blue in color
'06 Hofner 500/1 Contemporay Series Prototype--that's the one with all the German made parts.

Ok, no numbers here - just keep the ones I like - 1974 - 4001 2000 - 4003/5s
Have been thru the others Carvin, Gibson, Fender, etc. - matter of fact just gave a 5 string Fender to my nephew (learning to play) when I got the 4003 last fall. The Ric just felt right to me the Fender didn't.
