I was wondering if on the 4001 Bass, the Treble pickup cover is usefull, and if it would badly change the sound if i took it off the bass. The question comes to my mind because of my playing. I realize that on my other basses the «sweet spot» for me to play on the strings is exactly were the pickup cover is. I'm really thinking about taking the cover off.
Thank you.

It seems a lot of people take them off. I have them off on all my Rics. John Hall (Ric CEO) says it helps shield the pickup.

I've had it on and off for extended periods. I didn't notice any negative change in sound either way, but I think it looks better on and I'm using it as a hand rest.

My old sweet-spot was right over the pickup too... but adjusting to work around it took no time at all...

I've left the cover on my 4003.

It's never gotten in my way when I play with my fingers, and it makes a great handrest for pick playing.

I've gotten so used to playing with it there I'm putting pickup covers on my fretless Jazz Bass.

I draw the line at drilling holes in my 4005 however...

Ditto for me. When I first picked up a Ric it seemed the cover was in a very awkward spot. Over time I became used to it being there and actually resting my hand there seems natural. I intend to leave mine where it is, if you do the same you'll soon learn that everywhere on the Ric is a "sweet spot"

PAGoyette, I've only owned two Ric basses, both 4003's. I tried to keep the cover on my first one, but like you, that was the exact spot I like to play. So I took it off and immediately felt much more comfortable. My newest one came off immediately. Yeah, it looks cool with it on, but if that's your playing spot, by all means, take it off. I don't know about an exact percentage, but I'd venture a guess and say probably 60% of Ric bass players take it off, shielding or not.

Greetings,

I have a '99 4003 S/5...black. I found the same thing with the "sweet spot" being over the treble pickup.

Having posted a question as to whether anyone makes a pickup "surround" to keep pick fuzz, etc. from getting into the pickup area with the cover removed and was referred to pickguardian. This is company which makes replacement pick guards, etc. and who make plexiglass "surrounds" for Ric bass treble pickups. Fast service, price isn't bad and the guard looks quite good on the bass.
Give 'em a try!

LZ

Thank you all guys for your good advices.
I think i'll give it a try without the pickup. And maybe if it noises i'll try the custom pickup plate to shield the pick up.
By the way, is it easy to take off the cover, wich pieces do have i to take off and do i have to take off the strings before.
